What is reality? This fundamental question has haunted philosophers, scientists, and artists throughout the centuries. With the arrival of virtual reality, this thought experiment has only become even more urgent and maybe even essential for humankind’s survival.
Who better to give a devious artistic answer to this conundrum than Belgian dark electro duo MILDREDA with their monumental double album „Realities“? Mastermind Jan Dewulf is exceptionally qualified for this task among his peers as the Belgian musician holds a degree in philosophy.
While the previous album „Blue-Devilled“ explored hell as defined by French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre, the amused voice of Albert Camus whispers through the tracks of „Realities“. The double album has also been conceived under the influence of the ancient tale of Sisyphus: the endless cycle of failing and beginning again, the quiet sense of meaninglessness hovering like a fine mist over the human condition.
In tune with their deeply human subject, MILDREDA deliver their most emotional album to date. The band introduces colours and emotions rarely associated with a genre defined by cold, hard electronics. The Belgians are pushing their sound markedly beyond the traditional boundaries of dark electro. Although Canadian EBM influences remain audible as well as additional Belgium sonic flavour, MILDREDA again break into new musical dimensions.
With simply too much music and content generated by a creative big bang event, „Realities“ evolved into a true double album with MILDREDA revealing their intricate story across two CDs. The Belgians also gave extra space to include prominent guest vocals from a compatriot, SUICIDE COMMANDO’s Johan Van Roy, and Constantin „Breñal“ Warter of German cult act CALVA Y NADA fame.
MILDREDA appeared seemingly out of nowhere on the dark electro scene with their physical debut album „I Was Never Really There“. In reality, Jan Dewulf is connected to the EBM scene by a long history. In the early 90s at the age of 15 years, Jan got entirely hooked on such compatriots as THE KLINIK that he borrowed a keyboard from a friend and spent his holidays washing dishes at a pizza place to afford his first studio gear.
What began in the mid-1990s as a teenage fascination with synthesizers, tape machines, and dark electronic music quickly grew beyond a bedroom project. Early demo releases, including the cult cassette „De Laffe Denker“, circulated widely within underground electro circles and earned MILDREDA a devoted following.
After years of creative exploration through other musical ventures, Jan Dewulf eventually returned to the project with renewed purpose. The digitally released „Coward Philosophy“ (2016) laid the groundwork for a new era, but it was the signing to Dependent Records that truly marked MILDREDA’s rebirth.
With „I Was Never Really There“ (2021), the project re-emerged with a richer sound, sharper production, and greater emotional depth. The acclaimed concept album „Blue-Devilled“ (2023) expanded that vision even further, blending darkness, melody, atmosphere, and introspection into a work that established MILDREDA as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary dark electro.
With „Realities“, MILDREDA do not only deliver their most ambitious and innovative album both lyrically and musically yet, but also their most accessible record so far. Check it out!
